Susan here writing for Scott…yesterday morning when the team was getting ready to leave the hotel in Punta Arenas for the airport to fly to Antarctica Scott had his cell phone stolen. He was very upset for many different reasons one of which is this will greatly reduce his ability to blog. Scott worked very hard before he left to put together an excellent communication system that will allow him to share his journey. He won’t be able to do this to near the same extent now. I will provide updates using Mountain Professionals guide Ryan Waters blog updates and will add any personal notes I have from Scott. Here is Ryan’s update from November 15th.
Just a quick hello to check in and report that we have safely landed at the Union Glacier camp. All of the team are doing well and we had a nice slow day since about 4 pm here eating well in the mess tent and seeing some old and new faces.
Once all our cargo was brought over to where we are camping, we jumped into action and set up our tents to move in for the night. We are using 2 Hilleberg Keron 4 GT tents so they are plenty roomy, awesome expedition tents for polar environments. We have some fine tuning to our set up in the morning to dial out our systems and throughout the day we will do some repetition with how we will set up and take down camp, rigging our sleds just how we want them, and some meetings about the route.
Off to sleep now in the total light of 11:20 pm on the tents… the Antarctica summer is here!
Scott just sent a text saying that he went for a ski today (November 16) around Union Glacier with his sled fully loaded with 100kg of gear and food. It felt good, he said! He also said they were hoping to fly to the coast tomorrow to start their journey but there was fog in at the moment so he was not sure they could fly. Stay tuned……
