The Young Presidents Organization (YPO)

The Young Presidents Organization (YPO)

The Challenge

A group from the YPO- Toronto Chapter, was meeting for 2 days and wanted to end their time together with a team building program that would challenge them both physically and as a team- as well as get them outdoors! They wanted to take advantage of the amazing outdoor surroundings at their venue location as the group was indoors for most of their meeting.

The Solution

Summit delivered The Rescuers search and rescue simulation program. This 3-hour team building exercise challenged this team to find, treat and evacuate live victims that were situated in a search area on the premises. Summit facilitators armed the participants with the necessary skills through interactive workshops. We also made sure teams were up for the challenge through a preliminary team activity that reinforced the necessary team skills required to take on the search and rescue simulation. Participants were reminded of our “Challenge by Choice” philosophy, and encouraged to participate in a way that best suited them by taking on a role that was appropriate. The team then set up Base Camp and successfully found all the victims- through a well-planned strategy, effective communication and trust within the team.

Heritage Bank Nigeria

Heritage Bank Nigeria

The Challenge

When Scott Kress delivered a session for the Harvard OPM program reunion many took note of the high quality delivery and content and brought Scott into their organizations.

One such organization was Heritage Bank of Lagos, Nigeria. The Nigerian economy has been steadily growing and the country is making a transition from a third world country to a developing nation. Heritage Bank saw this as a great opportunity to invest in their leaders to create a more successful company and to build a stronger community.

The Solution

Summit developed a one-day leadership program that utilized case studies, leadership style models, team development strategies and experiential activities to produce a content rich and easily applicable program.

Scott flew to Nigeria and delivered this session five times for different audiences. Each day challenged the participants to examine who they are as leaders and what they are doing to grow the company and to build the community. Each participant identified their priorities and crafted and action plan for implementation. The program was a great success and Heritage Bank will be bringing in Scott on a regular basis as the company grows and new leaders are brought on board.

Bird Construction

Bird Construction

The Challenge

Bird Construction believes in investing in their people. Bird Academy was started to introduce several training initiatives to promote effective leadership, teamwork, and project management.

The first Leadership Development program was developed to be an 18 month multi module program to help their up and coming leaders acquire the skills necessary to thrive in today’s construction market.

The Solution

Summit partnered with Bird Academy to create several modules for their 18 month leadership development program. Summit designed and continues to deliver a leadership and a team development module.

The leadership module is a full day session that begins with Scott Kress’ Learning in Thin Air keynote. This presentation lays the foundation and introduces models, tools and theory that will be expanded upon later in the course. This classic mountaineering story examines the role of leadership in failure and success and challenges the participants to reflect upon the influence they have on their teams. The session goes on to discuss change and emotional intelligence as they relate to leadership.

The team development module utilizes a high ropes course to examine the evolution of high performance teams, the role of leadership and how to build trust. This day is a highlight of the program.

All participants identify their key insights from each session and develop and action plan for implementation. This ‘homework’ is then examined at the start of the next session to promote application and continuous learning.

Halton Region Conservation Authority

Halton Region Conservation Authority

The Challenge

After an employee engagement survey, several areas were identified that could use additional attention. The director did not want to make it all about the survey and the specific areas for improvement, but to focus on the overall culture and process improvement. The engagement survey would be taken again in 18 months, and a mini check-in survey would be done 12 months after the initial survey.

The Solution

Summit has been working with the HRCA for close to 10 years and have been involved in a long term leadership development program, all staff orientation, and employee recognition days. As Summit knew the culture of the organization, understood their business, and knew most of the employees it was natural that they were to turn to us for help.

After several planning meetings we launched an 18 month multi module program to focus on overall culture and process improvement with the end goal of achieving stronger scores on the employee engagement survey.

We started with an all staff orientation meeting to outline the plan, ask for their suggestions, and to gain their buy-in. From here we met with each individual department to identify their greatest strengths and their biggest challenges. We then met with the department heads to review the challenges and opportunities and to prioritize them and begin to develop appropriate action plans. Although not complete yet, the next phases will entail reviewing the plan with each department, implementing the plan, measuring development and fine tuning.

In the end we will be all set for the next installment of the engagement survey and are confident that the goal of increased scores will be met easily.

Rotman School of Management

Rotman School of Management

The Challenge

The Rotman School of Management was looking for an instructor to teach their Leadership Presence course in their EMBA and International Omnium EMBA programs. They school was also looking for new ideas around team building.

The leadership Presence course is not a class to teach students how to be a leader, but to encourage them to be self-reflective and to identify what leadership means to them.

Team building was identified as critical as much of the course work is done in teams and many of the teams were struggling to work effectively together.

The Solution

Scott Kress began to teach the Leadership Presence course with a mix of models, tools and strategies to allow the students to reflect upon leadership. Students completed an emotional intelligence assessment and an MBTI assessment and used these reports to help them create a personal leadership vision and to develop an action plan for growth towards this vision.

The team building was delivered at the start of each year to help the students identify the potential challenges they may face and to develop strategies to avoid or deal with these. Summit guided the students through a team development session that included a team charter, conflict resolution strategies and decision making styles. The end result was a greater ability of the teams to work well together and to be more self-reliant when dealing with challenges.
